By election results 2022. 1 day agoThe by-election in Wakefield was called when former MP Imran Ahmad Khan resigned after being jailed following a conviction for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy. As Wakefield faces a by-election this month the fall-out from the closures which brought deprivation hardship and years of unemployment to the borough will be one of the issues facing the candidates.

With 15 names on the ballot voters faced a choice between all the major English political parties plus numerous smaller parties and two independent candidates. The closures reduced the city from more than 50000 manufacturing and coal industry jobs in 1981 to just 19000 in 2019. The Wakefield poll is being held on the same day as the Tiverton and Honiton by-election which was called after Tory MP Neil Parish resigned over his viewing of pornography in the Commons.
